My Story

Michael Ryan, PhD

Founder & Coach

I am Dr. Michael Ryan, a well-being coach, strength and conditioning specialist, adjunct professor, and facilitator in performance psychology. Long before coaching became my profession, caring for others shaped who I am. I grew up watching my mother endure the challenges of cystic fibrosis before she passed away at just 47 years old. During my adolescence and teenage years, I assisted with her pulmonary physical therapy in our home. Those experiences introduced me early to the deeply human side of health: the importance of care, consistency, resilience, and simply being present for another person. They became the foundation of my desire to help others and remain at the heart of my why decades later. Movement also changed my life. My youth included team sports and competitive swimming, but being undersized eventually drew me toward strength training and bodybuilding. What began as a desire to develop physically evolved into an appreciation for the structure, discipline, consistency, and daily habits required to pursue meaningful goals. That commitment ultimately led me to win a national bodybuilding title in the Men's Lightweight class at the 1995 NPC USA Championships. More important than the title itself, the process reinforced lessons about preparation, perseverance, and purposeful behavior that continue to influence how I approach health and human performance today. For more than three decades, I have worked at the intersection of human performance, health, coaching, and education, helping people build the capacity to move well, live well, and perform with greater purpose. My career has included coaching and leadership roles at a luxury fitness brand, where I developed coaches, led teams, and worked closely with a diverse client base. My experience expanded into higher education, with faculty roles in kinesiology and psychology. Together, these experiences have shaped my coaching practice by integrating the practical lessons of working directly with people, the responsibility of developing other professionals, and the evidence-informed perspective of an educator. As the founder of Design Conditioning, I bring together strength and conditioning, nutrition, health and well-being coaching, and performance psychology within a holistic, client-centered approach. My work begins with understanding the whole person: their health history, movement, behaviors, environment, goals, challenges, and, importantly, the deeper reasons those goals matter. Throughout my career as a coach and educator, I have had the privilege of working with individuals ranging from adults seeking better health and longevity to competitive athletes and high-performing professionals. My work has also expanded into coaching mentorship, allowing me to share the principles and practices that have evolved through decades of coaching, leadership, education, and scholarship. My doctoral research in Performance Psychology explored meaning, purpose, personal growth, authenticity, autonomy, and human flourishing. That research gave scholarly language to principles that had been developing throughout my life and career: people flourish when they are supported, challenged, empowered, and given the conditions to grow. That perspective underpins Design Conditioning. I believe sustainable performance isn't something we simply achieve. It develops through the conditions we create, the capacities we cultivate, and the habits, relationships, and choices that support who we are becoming. I am honored to be your guide.

Our approach

Method over motivation.

Motivation comes and goes. What keeps progress moving is a plan you understand, a coach who adjusts it, and a routine that survives a bad week.

01

Assess before you train

Every plan starts with movement screening, training history, and an honest look at your schedule.

02

Adjust as life moves

Plans get reviewed regularly, so travel, injuries, and busy seasons don’t undo your progress.

03

Measure what matters

Strength, consistency, and how you feel — tracked simply, without obsessing over the scale.
